Keeping Your Window Blinds Safe

Window blinds are nice to look at and they add a touch of style to your home. However, they can also become safety hazards if not used responsibly. Young children and pets can get tangled in loop cords and suffer possible strangulation. To avoid these unpleasant incidents from happening and to enhance your enjoyment of your fabulous window coverings, keep the following safety tips in mind.

First, never place an infant's crib near window blinds with looped pull cords. Curious toddlers might be tempted to play with the cords which could cause untoward accidents to happen. Aside from a baby's crib, bookshelves and other furniture that lets children or pets climb to your windows must never be placed near a window blind that has looped cords. If possible, choose window blinds that do not have these cords at all.

For your peace of mind, it is highly recommended that you also purchase safety devices for your window blinds. For example, you can cut the window blinds' cords and use safety tassels instead. This prevents little children or pets from getting caught in the loops.

It also helps to talk to your children. Discourage them from playing near or playing with the looped cords of your window blinds. Explain the possible accidents that might happen if they do not follow your instructions. By making them aware of the possible dangers and consequences of being careless with window blinds, your children will understand the importance of obeying your rules regarding window blinds.
